General Questions
From setup to safety, we’ve covered your top questions. Still unsure? Contact our team for expert support and personalized guidance.
Can I leave the mats on all the time?
Yes, you can run the mats continuously throughout the winter without damaging them. However, this will increase electricity usage. For efficiency, use them only during snow conditions or pair them with a thermostat accessory to automate operation and save energy.
Why don’t the mats feel warm when I touch them?
The mats may not feel warm to the touch, especially in very cold weather. This is because your hand temperature is higher than the mat’s surface. If the plug light is illuminated, the mat is on and melting snow. If it doesn’t seem to melt after snowfall, contact us.
How much snow can the mats melt per hour, and how quickly do they work?
HotStep Mats melt about 1.5 to 2.5 inches of snow per hour, depending on ambient temperature and snow density.
How energy-efficient are the mats, and will they increase my electricity bill?
HotStep Mats use advanced heating film technology to melt snow faster while consuming up to 20% less energy than standard snow melting mats—helping you save on electricity costs.
Safety & Durability

Are the mats waterproof and safe to leave outside all winter?
Yes, the mats are fully waterproof and designed for extreme outdoor conditions. Made from heavy-duty rubber and watertight electrical connections, they perform safely in rain, snow, and freezing temperatures.
Are the power units waterproof?
The power unit is “rainproof” but not submersible. Avoid placing it in areas where water pools. Keep it elevated about 18" from the ground or protect it loosely with a plastic bag to prevent excess moisture exposure.
Can I place the mat on any surface?
Avoid placing the mat directly on surfaces with special sealants (like stamped concrete). To protect those coatings, use a thin heat blocker such as plywood, turf, or outdoor carpet underneath.
Are the mats safe to use on stairs and uneven surfaces?
Yes, HotStep Mats are designed to provide traction and stability on stairs and uneven areas, helping prevent slips and falls.
Is it safe to drive over the HotStep Snow Melting Heated Mats?
Yes. The mats can handle standard vehicular traffic in normal winter environments. Ensure the surface beneath is clear of sharp objects. For heavy or frequent truck use, contact technical support for guidance.
Can the mats handle heavy vehicles like trucks or SUVs?
Absolutely. Their heavy-duty rubber construction and enclosed heating film allow them to withstand vehicles driving over them without damage.
Are the snow melting mats safe to drive over, and can I park my vehicle on them?
They’re safe to drive over, but avoid parking vehicles on the mats for extended periods—prolonged contact may overheat tires or cause damage.
